| Bullies Drop Two in a Row |
| Wed, Mar 10, 2010, 1:38PM |
The Broadstreet Bullies lost two consecutive games for the first time since the New Year with an ugly 7-2 loss to the Moose, and a strong, but not strong enough 4-2 effort versus Team Goodtimes. The match versus the Moose was a collective failure where little went right and the Bullies just got outworked from start to finish. Versus the higher ranked Team Goodtimes, though, the Bullies played hard but came up against a hot goalie.
Don Hinks was the only one to light the lamp, sniping two very similar goals. That is not to say the Bullies were not shooting, though, as they out-chanced the Goodtimes by a wide margin. There were quality first and second opportunities all over the place but the Bullies were unable to solve the keeper. It was a good effort from start to finish from the entire team with everyone stepping up with some big plays at key times.
With just two games left in the regular season, the Bullies will face their toughest matchups yet as they take on two of the top ranked teams. First up will be The Hoffs on Sunday, March 14th at 3pm. |
| Bullies Too Hot for Coolies |
| Sat, Feb 27, 2010, 10:59PM |
After a disastrous loss to the AGS Kobras where little went right for the Broadstreet Bullies, they bounced back in fine form to dominate the Coolies 6-1. A few late scratches left the bench a little short in key areas, but everyone showed up to play with everyone involved offensively. With just four games left in the regular season every game is even more important withthe middle of the standings packed tightly.
The Bullies got just the start they wanted with Darryl Paget beating the Coolies netminder cleanly for a 1-0 lead just under a minute into the game. Unfortunately a fire drill of a line change hung Andy Dejonghe out to dry, letting the Coolies tie it up two minutes later. Richard Kirchener started off his monster of a game potting the game winner just before the 7 minute mark. The score stood at 2-1 Bullies for the balance of the period, but not for lack of trying. The bullies were snakebit despite crashing the net and getting multiple chances in close. Two goals were even debatably in, but could not be called definitively by the ref and were waived off.
It wasn't until late in the second when the floodgates opened, but the Bullies did add a little insurance early. Darryl Paget netted his second, and eighth of the year in the early goings to set the tone before a late powerplay sealed the deal. Clint Wilson found twine at 6:40, before Don Hinks and Gaetan Daniel also tallied 30 seconds apart to cap the night. A 6-1 win almost makes up for the disappoint 6-3 loss the previous week, and the two points were huge.
Dejonghe had another brilliant game where he wasn't challenged often, but did have to make several difficult saves at key times to keep the Coolies shut down. Aside from that it was a smart game all around with both great passing and individual plays. The D did a solid job at shutting down the attack and getting in the way and the forwards didn't let up.
With the end of the season approaching, the duration between games is getting shorter and the Bullies are back in action on Wednesday, March 3rd. They'll play the Moose at 10pm, as the Bullies attempt to move two games over .500 for the first time this season. |
| Bullies Come to Play in 11-2 Romp |
| Sun, Feb 14, 2010, 10:50PM |
After an embarassing showing the previous week, the Broadstreet Bullies came out ready to play, as they lit up the AGS Kobras for 11 goals, for their most convincing win of the season. Jeff Pejs, in a season long scoring slump, got the hat trick on a four point night, with several other players having multipoint nights, as all but one player found the scoresheet. The AGS Kobras deserve credit for not quitting and playing hard to the end, but it was a night where the Bullies just weren't going to be denied.
For such a high scoring game, things actually started relatively slowly as the Bullies were getting chances but not converting. With the lines finally set after a late player arrived, though, things started clicking. Jay Gilbert broke a 9 game scoring drougt of his own, completing on the wraparound to open the scoring eight minutes in. The Kobras responded, though, with a misplay in the neutral zone eventually finding it's way behind Andy Dejonghe on a lucky, but still impressive play by the Kobras, tying the game at 1-1. It took just over a minute though for the Bullies to respond, as the flood gates opened. Hank Ford blasted one from just outside the circle, beating a screened keeper to put the Bullies ahead once again. Aron Nenninger did the dirty work in front of the net, notching the eventual game winner with under 10 minutes remaining in the first. Richard Kirchener, playing his 200th career game, picked up his first goal of the season - his 50th of his career, again, beating the goalie cleanly from the point. With the Bullies already up 4-1, Aron Nenninger dug out a point shot to add his second, before Jeff Pejs finally snapped his goalless drought with 90 seconds remaining in the half. The teams went to the intermission with the Bullies ahead 6-1.
Some penalty trouble gave the special teams a workout early in the second, though, as a couple of consecutive penalties put the Bullies down two men for a full minute, with the second penalty being 4 minutes, forcing them to kill for over 5 straight minutes. The line was held, though, with Dejonghe turning away everything that came his way. The offence then went back to work couresy of Cordell Ferguson, now a 7-1 game. Jeff Pejs roofed his second of the game to make it 8-1, but a careless penalty by the Bullies gave the Kobras another man advantage. They struck quickly, taking just 20 seconds to pick up their second of the game. With the clock winding down, the Bullies had one last offensive flurry. Jeff Pejs completed his hat trick with just over three minutes to play, and then Don Hinks made it 10-2 with two minutes remaining. Jay Gilbert added his second on an embarassing play as he took a stretch pass well offside, sullying what was otherwise a good five hole move to make it 11-2.
Absolutely nothing wrong in the Bullies effort in this one. Despite the score, they didn't let up and played hard every shift. There were no signs of bad habits and the team worked well at both ends. After being hung out to dry last game, Dejonghe was sharp once more, continuing his career season.
The Bullies will get another crack at moving up into the top tier of the standings, taking on the Knowlton Gnashers on Friday, February 19th at 8:30pm. The Bullies have played well against them in the past, and this is a huge game in terms of the playoff standings. |

We finally have the complete balance of our schedule and it has been posted on the site. Of note are two weeknight 10pm games (our only two late games of the season), as well as four of our final eight games being weekend matchups. The winter 09/10 regular season will wrap up on March 20th, giving just enough time for the playoffs before the summer season starts on April 5th. |
| Bullies Streak Alive, Despite Adversity |
| Sat, Jan 30, 2010, 1:01PM |
Riding a three game winning streak, the Bullies faced their toughest test thus far versus the Super Troopers. It was a battle for 7th place, with the Bullies continuing their climb up the standings. Even with some adversity brought on by some disputed calls, the Bullies dug deep to earn their hardest fought win of the season.
It was a rough start from even before the opening whistle, with a ref calling an equipment foul on the Bullies, sending Andy Dejonghe to the dressing room before the ball had even dropped. Unable to call their timeout until the play had officially started, the Bullies were forced to play well over a minute without a goalie. They held the line, though, keeping the ball deep, before eventually a stop in the play allowed Dejonghe to return between the pipes. The scramble to start got the Bullies a bit confused, though, allowing the Super Troopers to open the scoring just under 3 minutes into the period. Their lead did not last long, though, with the Bullies scoring one of their more unconventional goals. Scott Gervais, mired in a season long scoring slump, continued his stellar play of late as he busted in alone and shoveled the ball in one handed up and over the Troopers' keeper to knot the game at one a piece two minutes later. The Super Troopers retook the lead just before the halfway, but again, the Bullies countered. Darryl Paget blasted one home to even the game up with 9 left in the half. It was then Hank Ford who gave the Bullies their first lead, converting in the final five minutes of the first to put the Bullies up 3-2. The back and forth continued, though, as the Super Troopers once again got back on the board in the final minute.
The first period was a battle from start to finish, featuring six goals. Despite the second only having a single goal, it was just as tough a period. Both teams had their chances, both at even strength and on the powerplay, but despite some tense moments neither team seemed to be able to take the lead. It seemed like the Bullies caught a break halfway through the period when one of the Troopers top scorers got called for 2+10. The Bullies couldn't convert on the man advantage, but it did keep a scoring threat off the ice for the remainder of the period. They did get a second man advantage, though, in the final 5 mintes a second powerplay got the job done. Hank Ford and Darryl Paget broke in on a 2 on 1, with Ford choosing the shot instead of the pass, beating the goalie cleanly to restore the Bullies lead, 4-3. It was then a matter of killing the clock, and then killing a late delay of game penalty and holding on with the goalie pulled. It was a rock solid kill, though, capped by a glorious sliding save by Dejonghe.
The Bullies are finally rolling along well with all of the lines clicking and playing to their potential. Goal droughts are being snapped and all of the lines are looking like threats to score.
A chance to go for five straight is just a week away versus the 3-7-0-1 Raging Bulls. Despite their record, the Bulls have wins over 2 of the top 5 teams so should not be taken lightly. Gametime is 7pm on Friday, February 5th. |
