We finally have the complete balance of our schedule and it has been posted on the site. Of note are two weeknight 10pm games (our only two late games of the season), as well as four of our final eight games being weekend matchups. The winter 09/10 regular season will wrap up on March 20th, giving just enough time for the playoffs before the summer season starts on April 5th. |
| Bullies Streak Alive, Despite Adversity |
| Sat, Jan 30, 2010, 1:01PM |
Riding a three game winning streak, the Bullies faced their toughest test thus far versus the Super Troopers. It was a battle for 7th place, with the Bullies continuing their climb up the standings. Even with some adversity brought on by some disputed calls, the Bullies dug deep to earn their hardest fought win of the season.
It was a rough start from even before the opening whistle, with a ref calling an equipment foul on the Bullies, sending Andy Dejonghe to the dressing room before the ball had even dropped. Unable to call their timeout until the play had officially started, the Bullies were forced to play well over a minute without a goalie. They held the line, though, keeping the ball deep, before eventually a stop in the play allowed Dejonghe to return between the pipes. The scramble to start got the Bullies a bit confused, though, allowing the Super Troopers to open the scoring just under 3 minutes into the period. Their lead did not last long, though, with the Bullies scoring one of their more unconventional goals. Scott Gervais, mired in a season long scoring slump, continued his stellar play of late as he busted in alone and shoveled the ball in one handed up and over the Troopers' keeper to knot the game at one a piece two minutes later. The Super Troopers retook the lead just before the halfway, but again, the Bullies countered. Darryl Paget blasted one home to even the game up with 9 left in the half. It was then Hank Ford who gave the Bullies their first lead, converting in the final five minutes of the first to put the Bullies up 3-2. The back and forth continued, though, as the Super Troopers once again got back on the board in the final minute.
The first period was a battle from start to finish, featuring six goals. Despite the second only having a single goal, it was just as tough a period. Both teams had their chances, both at even strength and on the powerplay, but despite some tense moments neither team seemed to be able to take the lead. It seemed like the Bullies caught a break halfway through the period when one of the Troopers top scorers got called for 2+10. The Bullies couldn't convert on the man advantage, but it did keep a scoring threat off the ice for the remainder of the period. They did get a second man advantage, though, in the final 5 mintes a second powerplay got the job done. Hank Ford and Darryl Paget broke in on a 2 on 1, with Ford choosing the shot instead of the pass, beating the goalie cleanly to restore the Bullies lead, 4-3. It was then a matter of killing the clock, and then killing a late delay of game penalty and holding on with the goalie pulled. It was a rock solid kill, though, capped by a glorious sliding save by Dejonghe.
The Bullies are finally rolling along well with all of the lines clicking and playing to their potential. Goal droughts are being snapped and all of the lines are looking like threats to score.
A chance to go for five straight is just a week away versus the 3-7-0-1 Raging Bulls. Despite their record, the Bulls have wins over 2 of the top 5 teams so should not be taken lightly. Gametime is 7pm on Friday, February 5th. |
| Bulles Stop Rebels in their Tracks |
| Wed, Jan 20, 2010, 3:59PM |
The Broadstreet Bullies extended their winning streak to three with a decisive victory over their longtime foes, The Rebels. It was another defensively strong game for the Bullies, but even more importantly, it was the first time the offence has been able to break out since the start of the season. Even scoring five goals, the Bullies had even more great chances as all three lines threatened all game long. It was easily the Bullies most dominant performance of the season.
That being said, the game did not start well. A little bit of confusion and some missed assignments led to an early 1-0 Rebels lead, just over a minute into the game. The Bullies responded accordingly though, as that instantly got the entire team into the game. The offensive chances started coming off the backs of some great work by the Bullies blueliners to hold the line and keep the pressure on. Hank Ford rifled one home off of a turnover to draw the game to even with 18:28 remaining in the first. The Bullies continued to look dangerous and came close on a few chances before Clint 'Pops' Wilson took the lead. It was a beautiful tic-tac-toe play with Wilson standing alone, slapping one home from just outside the crease. Don Hinks then set a Bullies franchise record with a third consecutive game winning goal in the final 5 minutes of the period. The Rebels called their timeout, but weren't able to muster much of an attack, so the Bullies held onto their 3-1 lead going into the break.
The Bullies did not sit back though and continued to press the attack into the second. The forecheckers were winning every race and battle, and the D held the line so well the time on attack was heavily skewed in the Bullies favour. Cordell Ferguson added a little insurance thanks to his three point night, finishing off another tic-tac-toe play. The Rebels crawled back within two, beating Dejonghe on a long shot after a long period of inactivity with 8 minutes to play, but the Bullies responded immediately. Hank Ford tallied his second of the game, capping the score at 5-2. There was one final bit of excitement, with Dejonghe making a very dramatic sliding pad stack to eliminate any chance of a late comeback for the opposition.
It was a rock solid effort all around as the Bullies completely neutralized the 7-1-1-1 Rebels. The Rebels really only got their chances off of mistakes by the Bullies, and teammates were covering for each other so well there were rarely any moments of panic. It was also very good to see some of the Bullies guns firing again, with multipoint nights from 4 players. Perhaps it is no coincidence that one of their most complete games was on the first game in ages featuring three full lines.
It's another 10-day break before the Bullies get another match versus the 5-3-2 Super Troopers. Gametime is 9pm on Friday, January 29th. |
| Bullies Sever The Connection |
| Mon, Jan 11, 2010, 10:06AM |
The Broadstreet Bullies brought another strong defensive effort, as Andy Dejonghe backstopped them to a 2-1 regulation win over the RC Connection. Goals are not plentiful for the Bullies of late, but they continue to shut down the opposing offence and get the goals when they need them. This is just the Bullies first pair of back to back wins, and more impressively, came against a team with only a single regulation loss so far.
The Bullies went with three all new lines for this game with a number of key players missing. The struggle to get quality shots and second chances continued, but all three lines did have a number of great shifts in the first period where they were able to sustain pressure. The Pejs/Draginda/Day line especially had a very notable shift late in the first where they nearly capitalized a few times. The shots were relatively close though as the clock wound down, but the Bullies found themselves short handed on a very close high sticking the ball penalty to Don Hinks. The Bullies nearly killed it off, but in the final 30 seconds, a Connection player narrowly beat Dejonghe on a redirection from the side of the net, sending the Bullies to the break down 1-0.
The goal against definitely ramped up the emotion for the Bullies as they wanted to get one back for their netminder quickly, and it was Randy Moisan who made it happen. His point shot beat the Connection keeper from near the blue line to even the game 1-1 just under 5 minutes into the second. Defensively, the Bullies gave up almost nothing for the remainder of the game as the Connection team, despite their longer bench, seemed to be slowing down a bit. Still, neither team was able to draw ahead, with the game seemingly destined for overtime, when the Bullies took another penalty with under 5 minutes to play. A textbook perfect penalty kill shut them down though and gave the Bullies all the momentum heading into the dying minutes. With under two minutes to play and an offensive zone faceoff, the Bullies called a time out to try and set things up. It was a lost draw, but it did not matter, as Don Hinks repeated his heroics from the previous game, once again stealing the ball on a turnover and blasting it home. There were a few hairy moments after that, with the Connection goalie pulled for the extra attacker, but the Bullies kept the crease clear and held on for the win.
This was a much needed win for the Bullies, as they move just one game under .500. Dejonghe's netminding has been nothing less than superb in the last 7 games as he's done everything in his power to keep his team in the games. If the offence could get going a little more some of the pressure might get taken off of him, but timely goal scoring has been the key of late as well.
The Bullies will face another longtime rival on Tuesday, January 19th at 7pm versus the Rebels. The Rebels are 6-1-1-1 through their first 9, but the Bullies have had great success against them in the past so it should be another competitive game. |
| Bullies School Piranhas |
| Thu, Jan 7, 2010, 2:34PM |
The Broadstreet Bullies finally got another notch on the win column after a few weeks of solid play where they were just not being rewarded for their efforts. It was a big 3-2 overtime win over the Piranhas, and a couple of valuable points in the standings. The Bullies brought another stellar defensive effort, with Andy Dejonghe leading the way between the pipes, but the sleeping giant that is the Bullies offence may be starting to wake up as well.
The first period ended up being a quiet one on the score sheet as neither team was able to break the stalemate. The Bullies were holding the line well and not allowing many offensive chances for the Piranhas, but were also unable to generate many quality chances, either. They played the patient game though and didn't try and force the play, trusting in their ability to capitalize when they had the best chances. They did get a pair of powerplays in the frame, and were able to get some shots away but were unable to finish. The game went to the break with the teams scoreless.
The Bullies were able to carry that momentum into the second, as the Piranhas took their third consecutive penalty just over 5 minutes into the frame. In the latter half of the PP, the Bullies finally struck, with Don Hinks tipping Hank Ford's point shot home for the game's opening goal. This gave the Bullies a huge boost as they started getting more odd man rushes and more controlled time in the attacking zone. Just before the halfway mark of the period, Darryl Paget made it a 2-0 lead as he was rewarded for his strong play through the neutral zone. The Bullies held their two goal margin until late in the game when they took a pair of penalties. The PK units killed off the first with ease, and almost finished off the second one before a Piranha player was able to bat the ball out of the year with 5 seconds left on the kill. Two minutes later, they evened the game at two as a bit of a breakdown after a faceoff caught the Bullies running around a bit. Despite coughing up the lead, the Bullies showed no fair as they went back on the attack. A late powerplay opportunity almost sealed the deal, but the game went to overtime with the game knotted at two.
It was Don Hinks, potting his second of the game, as the overtime hero as he intercepted the ball on a turnover and wired it home to seal the win with a minute left on the clock.
After a rough start where the team wasn't clicking well and was giving up too many goals against, Dejonghe has settled in fantastically well in net. He has a sterling 2.33 GAA in the last six games and the team has been playing some of their best defensive hockey in years. Goals have been scarce lately, but there are signs that some players are ready to break out of their slumps, and if so, the Bullies will be well poised to make a charge up the standings.
The Bullies play their third game in 9 days on Sunday, January 10th at 10pm vs the 5-1-2-1 RC Connection. |
