  • Bullies Fall to Berserkers, But Sneak Into Playoffs Regardless
    Fri, Jul 23, 2010, 3:08PM

In their final regular season game of the 2010 season, the Broadstreet Bullies went in with a hunger for a victory. A win would clinch a playoff berth and a chance to redeem a disappointing season. With the final standings so close the Bullies really had no idea how the final standings would shake out and were counting on the victory to seal the deal. As it stood, a finish anywhere between 11th and 16th was possible, with only the top 14 making the post season. Unfortunately, after a very hard fought battle the Bullies fell 4-3 in overtime to the Berserkers. The loser point they picked up was good enough to push them up into 13th.

Both teams had a lot to play for - the Bullies were fighting for their playoff lives, and the Berserkers were fighting to get a bye through the elimination games. The Berserkers looked a bit better early on, and got on the board first, scoring with 13:38 remaining in the first to put the Bullies behind. As he has done all year long, though, Darryl Paget led the counterattack and got his team back in it. With 7 minutes left in the first he evened things up on a statement goal. The teams went back and forth with the Bullies holding the edge in shots in the second half of the period as their forecheck finally got going. At the buzzer, things were tied at one a piece.

In the second, Paget blew the game wide open, scoring a pair of goals thirty seconds apart in the first minute to put the Bullies up 3-1. It was another natural hat trick for Paget, as well as his 150th career goal and 300th career point. From there, the Bullies tried to hold on as the Berserkers tried to even the game up. They inched closer halfway through the frame getting within one, and eventually tied the game 3-3 with 5 minutes to play. From there, the Bullies threw everything they had at them trying to retake the lead but even with a shortened bench couldn't get the go ahead goal and the game went to OT.

It was the Berserkers who got the game winner, though, with 1:21 remaining in OT as some post line change confusion left a seam that got taken advantage of. This sent a very dejected Bullies back to the room until it was discovered that the loser point (and some key losses by rivals close in the standings) had bumped them back into the playoffs. Despite the game result it was a solid Bullies game, and a great way to finish off the regular season. Dejonghe had another exceptional game between the pipes and the D continued to play well - especially Chris Talbot, who had an outstanding game.

The Bullies will play a single game elimination on Sunday, July 25th at 8pm at the Sportsdome for a chance to advance to the round robin quarter finals. They'll play the Super Troopers, with the two teams splitting the season series. It should be a high scoring affair, with a total of 29 goals being scored by the two teams in the pair of matchups this season.

    Bullies Keep Hope Alive
    Tue, Jul 20, 2010, 1:16PM

Fighting for their playoff lives, the Broadstreet Bullies remained in the mix with a decisive 5-2 victory over the Tin Bashers. The win snapped a three game losing streak that had put the Bullies on the brink of elimination. For now they remain within striking distance of a playoff spot, and with one final victory and a little help from the teams ahead of them, may be able to sneak into the post season. More specifically, it was an impressive effort as the Bullies were once again short benched and had another solid victory at the Sports Dome while only being able to run three defencemen. Andy Dejonghe played a huge game as well to preserve the win.

Both teams were a little light on bodies, but the Bullies even moreso. Still, they looked good early on and had no trouble attacking. They got the benefit of a lack of discipline by the Tin Bashers, who took a pair of misconduct penalties, and made it count on the man advantage. Less than half a minute into their first powerplay, just before the halfway mark of the first, Cordell Ferguson sniped one to make it 1-0. Darryl Paget followed up thirty seconds later to extend the lead to two, and then Ferguson added his second two minutes after that for a 3-0 Bullies lead. The Tin Bashers broke the shutout bid shortly thereafter, but before the period was over, Don Hinks had a beauty of a tip to make it 4-1 heading into the break.

The Tin Bashers narrowed the gap to two once more with 13:27 remaining in the second, but the Bullies responded yet again as Paget's second of the game made it 5-2. The Bashers had a little more life in the second after serving their misconducts, but the Bullies caught a few breaks and were able to stave them off and hold on for the win.

Hank Ford, Darcy Skish, and Nicholas Paufler were worked hard all night patrolling the blueline, doing a great job despite double shifting every second shift. Up front, the Paget/Hinks/Ferguson line contributed 15 points on the 5 goals. The second line of Day/Daniel/Gilbert was held off the scoresheet but had their share of quality opportunities as well. It cannot be underestimated how important Dejonghe's performance was as well, with his glovehand being red hot.

It's fair to say their final game is must win, as they get a rematch versus the Berserkers on Thursday, July 22nd at 8:15pm at West.

Bullies Outlast Usual Suspects in Goaltending Duel
    Tue, Jul 6, 2010, 9:41AM

The Bullies relentless march up the standings continued with their fourth win in a row, now 6-1-1 in their last 8. This time it was the Usual Suspects who couldn't deny the Bullies in a very closely fought 2-1 final. It was a cleanly played and tight game with both teams clearly wanting the win - certainly one of the best matches of the year in that regard. In the end, though, the Bullies got the job done and earned a very valuable couple of points. The playoff race is heating up with only 5 games remaining and there is no margin for error now with at least half of the playoff spots up for grabs.

The Usual Suspects played a strong game, especially in the opening period where they largely dominated for the first half of the frame. The Bullies looked a bit out of sync to start as they struggled to find their rhythm, with Andy Dejonghe keeping them in it while they found their legs. As the game wore on, the play started to even out but not before the Usual Suspects got on the board first, putting in a screened pointshot just after a faceoff for a 1-0 lead with just over 6 minutes remaining in the period. The lead would be short lived, though, as the Bullies drew their only man advantage of the game and took full advantage. After a slick passing play, Darryl Paget blasted one through the Suspects keeper, trickling through the other side, sending the game to the intermission all squared up at 1-1.

Things really started to open up for the Bullies in the second half as they began to press the attack. Posession and time in the opposing zone went up as they were successful at both cycling the ball as well as just dumping and chasing and making things happen. Sonny McDermott continued his own scoring streak, adding his third goal in two games on a bit of a fluke goal that still counted all the same. It was the only other goal the Bullies would need, though not for lack of trying. They controlled the pace of the game more and more, limiting the Suspects chances and supporting Dejonghe in net. They survived their own penalty kill, and even in the dying minutes with the Suspects looking to pull their keeper, kept the pressure on and ate the clock. It was another solid team effort all around with everyone having strong games once again. All the little things were being done right.

Standings wise, the Bullies will face their highest ranked remaining opponent on Thursday versus the second ranked Moose (14-3-1). Game time is 9:30pm at West.
